Island Greetings from Madame Pele!

According to local legend, it is unwise to take any souvenir from Pele's mountain without asking or leaving a gift, lest bad luck follow you everywhere.  When I was on staff at the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, we would get boxes and boxes of lava rock that people had taken as souvenirs, and then they read in their hometown newspapers that it was bad luck to take things.  We took them in and when someone came over from the Big Island, they would take the stones home and then give them back to Madame Pele.

Many people claim to have seen Pele and I believe them.  Once, standing in a lava field on the Big Island, I became aware of a beautiful young woman standing near me.  I smiled at her and said hello, and she nodded in return.  A moment later when I turned back to her, she had vanished into thin air!  I knew it was Pele!  Lady Sharona had a similar sighting as did a Kahuna I know.  Sometimes she appears as a old woman with flowing hair.  Once you have seen her, you will know her.

She is zealously protective of her lands and her children. Traditional offerings include coins, strawberries, hair, sugarcane, flowers, tobacco, brandy, olelo berries, gin, and silk.   When Lady Sharona went to the Big Island recently, she took a bottle of gin from her and me, opened it up at the top of Kilauea Crater and poured it in.  Some of the gin splashed back to her, as if Pele was happy and sharing a drink with her. 

When I worked at the Hawaiiana Hotel in Waikiki, one of the elderly co-head-housekeepers, a Hawaiian lady, came in the office and said that in dream of the previous evening, Pele appeared to her and said that she should tell the haole (white, foreigner) girl in the office that her Hawaiian name is Lokelani, or Rose of Heaven.  It is quite an honor to be given in a dream by the Goddess, and I felt truly blessed.  It is also interesting that my biological dad wanted to name me rose after the Cherokee legend of the White Rose.  Mom won, naming me Cheryl, but when I got out of high school and started traveling the world, she always called me her Rambling Rose.

 Coven Moonshadow's Center call for the June 2009 Full Moon ritual was to Pele:

We call the white, black and "special" dragons that rule the center of the circle and balance all the other elements into a cool, even grey tone of magic to help us invoke Pele, Goddess of fire, lightning, dance, volcanoes, and violence, you who are a daughter of Haumea and Kane Milohai, whose home is the fire pit of Halemaumau crater at the summit caldera of Kilauea, we invoke your fiery presence tonight in this rite.  We ask for your protection, mighty Goddess, as we celebrate this night and all throughout our lives.
